Automatic GEOFON Global Seismic Monitor -Earthquake Information Service- Scope Rapid global earthquake information has recently become a major task of the GEOFON Program. E.g. GFZ is a key node of the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) and has the responsibility for rapid global earthquake alerts. It became also a leading force in earthquake monitoring for tsunami warning in the Mediterranean and the NE Atlantic as well as for the Indian Ocean.
